Drinking alcohol after microneedling slows healing and worsens redness. Here's why, and how long to stay dry.

Why Alcohol Slows Microneedling Recovery
Alcohol is a vasodilator — it widens blood vessels and intensifies the flushing, redness, and swelling that already follow microneedling. It also dehydrates the skin, suppresses immune function, and disrupts sleep, all of which slow the wound-healing cascade microneedling depends on for collagen production.
How Long to Avoid Drinking
- 24 hours before — alcohol thins blood and can increase pinpoint bleeding during the procedure.
- 24–48 hours after — to minimize redness, swelling, and bruising.
- 72 hours after RF microneedling — deeper thermal injury needs more recovery time.
What About Alcohol on Your Skin?
Avoid topical alcohol for at least 7 days — that includes alcohol-based toners, witch hazel with alcohol, hand sanitizer near the face, and most spray sunscreens. Alcohol strips the lipid barrier and stings open microchannels.
If You Do Drink
If a celebration is unavoidable:
- Hydrate aggressively — one glass of water per drink minimum.
- Choose clear spirits over red wine and dark liquors (less histamine and tannins).
- Skip very salty or spicy foods that compound swelling.
- Expect more visible redness the next morning and apply extra mineral SPF.
FAQs
Is wine worse than beer?
Red wine and dark beer cause the most flushing because of histamines and sulfites. Vodka with soda or sparkling water is the lowest-impact choice if you must drink.
