Can I Wash My Face After Microneedling?

November 2, 2024 5 min read

Washing your face after microneedling needs to be gentle and timed correctly. Here's exactly what to use and when.

When You Can First Wash Your Face

Most providers recommend waiting 4 to 6 hours after microneedling before rinsing your face, and at least 24 hours before using any cleanser. Right after treatment, your skin is covered in a thin layer of serum and lymphatic fluid that is actually helping it heal. Washing too soon strips this protective layer.

How to Wash Your Face Safely

  1. Wet your hands with lukewarm (never hot) water.
  2. Splash water gently onto your face — don't rub.
  3. If using cleanser (after 24 hours), apply a small amount of a sulfate-free, fragrance-free, pH-balanced cleanser with fingertips only. No washcloths, no brushes, no Clarisonic.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
  5. Pat dry with a clean, soft towel — never wipe.

Which Cleanser to Use

Look for cleansers that are:

  • Free of fragrance, essential oils, and exfoliating acids.
  • Sulfate-free and non-foaming.
  • Formulated with calming ingredients like centella asiatica, oat, or ceramides.

Good options: CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser, La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating, or Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser.

What to Avoid for 5–7 Days

  • Hot water and steam.
  • Cleansing brushes, washcloths, exfoliating mitts.
  • Foaming cleansers, micellar water with alcohol.
  • Anything with retinol, AHA, BHA, vitamin C, or benzoyl peroxide.
