Retinol After Microneedling: How Long to Wait

November 4, 2024 4 min read

Retinol after microneedling can damage healing skin. Learn how long to pause your retinoid and how to safely reintroduce it.

Why You Must Pause Retinol

Retinol (and stronger prescription retinoids like tretinoin) speeds cell turnover and exfoliates the skin's outer layer. Microneedling already triggers aggressive cell turnover and a controlled wound-healing response. Combining the two overwhelms the skin barrier — expect raw patches, prolonged redness, peeling, and a much higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

How Long to Stop Before and After

Stop retinol 5–7 days before your microneedling appointment and wait at least 7 days after before restarting. If your skin is still pink or peeling at day 7, wait until it looks and feels completely normal — typically 10–14 days for sensitive skin.

The same waiting period applies to retinaldehyde, adapalene (Differin), and all prescription retinoids.

How to Safely Restart Retinol

When your skin is calm, ease back in:

  • Start with two non-consecutive nights per week.
  • Apply a pea-sized amount over a thin layer of moisturizer (the 'sandwich' method).
  • Skip the eye area and the corners of the nose for the first week.
  • Use SPF 30+ every morning — non-negotiable.

If you've just done a deeper treatment like RF microneedling, double the waiting period.

FAQs

What can I use instead during the wait?

Bakuchiol, peptides, hyaluronic acid, and centella asiatica all support healing without irritation.

Does retinol before microneedling improve results?

Used consistently in the weeks before treatment (then paused as instructed), retinol can prime the skin — but stopping on time matters more than starting early.
