Vaseline is cheap, pure petrolatum that some patients use post-microneedling. Here's when it works and when to choose something else.

Is Vaseline Safe After Microneedling?
Yes — Vaseline (100% white petrolatum) is one of the most studied occlusives in dermatology. It's hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, and forms a protective film that reduces transepidermal water loss by up to 99%. For dry, healing skin it can be an excellent short-term option after microneedling.
Vaseline vs Aquaphor
The two are often used interchangeably, but they're not identical:
- Vaseline: 100% petrolatum. Pure occlusive, no actives, lanolin-free.
- Aquaphor: 41% petrolatum plus mineral oil, lanolin, panthenol, and glycerin — slightly more healing but contains lanolin (a common allergen).
Choose Vaseline if you have a lanolin allergy or want the simplest possible barrier.
How to Use Vaseline Correctly
- Wash hands thoroughly before touching.
- Apply a very thin layer — not a thick coat. Petrolatum is most effective in a sheer film.
- Use for the first 24–48 hours only, then transition to a regular moisturizer.
- Reapply if skin feels tight or starts to crack.
When to Skip Vaseline
- Oily or acne-prone skin — occlusion can trap sebum and trigger breakouts.
- Hot, humid environments — heavy occlusives feel uncomfortable.
- Beyond 48 hours — switch to a moisturizer so the skin can return to normal barrier function.
FAQs
Can I sleep in Vaseline?
Yes, a thin layer overnight on night 1 is fine. Use a clean pillowcase.
Will Vaseline cause breakouts?
Pure petrolatum is non-comedogenic — but if it traps existing sebum and bacteria, you can break out. Keep the layer thin and stop at 48 hours.
